Speech and Language Therapy for children in a bilingual world

Welcome to my website. My name is Leonie Roth – I’m a British trained Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) based in Zurich who works with children from 0 to 18 years old. I gained my professional qualification from University College London in 2010. I am a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (www.rcslt.com), and I also hold a degree in psychology.

In 2015 I moved to Switzerland and I switched from working with children who were mostly monolingual to those who are mostly bilingual (English plus one or more languages). My daughter was born in 2017 and raising her in two languages (English/German) has given me valuable insight into how best I can support bilingual children and their families.

Whether you are a parent, caregiver or someone who works with children, I want you to feel informed and confident about how you can best support your child. Send me an email and I will put you on my mailing list newsletter, where I’ll focus on an interesting topic or frequently asked question. I’ll also let you know about the training sessions I’ll be running throughout the year.

Speech, Language and Communication needs

I support children’s:

  • Early communication development – late talkers, play skills, turn taking and attention to tasks.
  • Speech development – phonological awareness, pronunciation of sounds in words and being understood.
  • Language development – understanding what is said asked, using words and forming sentences, social interactions.
  • Literacy development – strong speech and language skills are the foundation of learning to successfully read and write.

Assessment

Every child has a “language story” to tell and it’s my task to map out their speech, language and communication strengths and needs.

Assessment is designed around a child’s age, levels of attention and concerns. This can include a combination of one or more face-to-face sessions & gathering information from everyone who knows or works with that child (e.g. previous reports, questionnaires, interviews).

A written summary or a comprehensive report can be provided, followed by a face-to-face or online meeting to talk about strengths, needs and next steps.

Speech and Language Therapy

Assessment tells us all about your child’s strengths and current needs, and therapy uses evidence-based approaches to turn them into functional & creative therapy goals.

Building your child’s confidence and independence is at the centre of every therapy programme.

The recommended frequency of therapy will depend on you child’s needs: twice-a-week, once a week or every two weeks.

Speech and Language Therapy can be delivered in Zurich and the surrounding area at home, in school or online.
